The Slow Living teacher

What looks like laziness is usually sheer exhaustion.

If you’re a teacher scrolling this page during your lunch break, already thinking about the 200 things still on your to-do list… deep breath 😮‍💨
This is a pause where it’s safe to admit that.

I’m Kimberley – a high school Science and Maths teacher in Melbourne, Australia, a lover of vintage books, antique stone bottles, and the heart behind The Slow Living Teacher.

I created this blog for experienced teachers all over the world who, like me, have poured years (and soul) into their work, only to find themselves running on fumes, wondering if they’re the problem.

Teachers aren’t failing.
The system keeps failing them.
And no amount of laminating, colour-coded planners or “self-care” PDs is going to fix it.

My story? It started with burnout.

With over 25 years of experience, like many educators, I’ve felt the weight of burnout and the longing for a more balanced life.

While still in the classroom, I’m actively exploring ways to integrate slow living into my daily routine and planning for a future beyond traditional teaching.

I created The Slow Living Teacher during a period of intense burnout – not because I had all the answers, but because I needed to find some.

As I began to simplify my life and envision possibilities beyond the classroom, I realized I wasn’t alone. This blog is my way of sharing insights and strategies with fellow teachers seeking clarity and change.

What you’ll find here

This space is for teachers who feel stuck in the constant pressure and pace of the classroom and – want something more.

Whether you’re exploring what it might look like to leave teaching, or just trying to make it through the term without losing yourself, I’m here to help you take the next step.

On The Slow Living Teacher, you’ll find:

  • Practical ways to leave work at work – because your evenings shouldn’t belong to your marking pile
  • Mindset tools and reflections – to help you rebuild your sense of self, not just your lesson plans
  • Step-by-step support for planning your exit strategy – when you’re ready to explore life beyond the classroom
  • A slow-living approach to teacher life – with tips for reclaiming your time, your energy, and your weekends
  • Vintage home inspiration + cozy routines – because your home should feel like a sanctuary, not another to-do list

Everything I create – blog posts, resources, digital tools – is designed to offer both emotional clarity and real-world support.

I’m still teaching, but I’m actively designing my way out. And I want to help you do the same – in your own time, on your own terms.

A few things about me

I believe slow living is possible even on a school day it – just takes intention.

I dream of living in a century-old farmhouse with 100 hectares of space and animals galore.

I thrift like it’s an Olympic event. Willow teacups? Instant dopamine.

I’m married to Andrew and we’ve got two teenage boys, which means my life is full and messy and sometimes loud.

I teach explicitly, calmly, and old-school – but I’m ready to leave the classroom soon.

Let’s stay connected

Join me as I embark on a journey towards a more balanced, sustainable, and soul-nourishing way of living. I am passionate about helping exhausted teachers reclaim their joy and vitality by embracing the principles of slow living and creating nurturing home environments to retreat to.
